Writers retreat in France

People writing in gardens, cafes and parks

In September 2020, a very special writers retreat will take place in Bordeaux. With three great writing instructors on hand including Cara Black, New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of 19 books, this one week course is designed to help and support writers of all genres and all levels.

Whether you’re a writer who’s kept it secret but you’re ready to share, bursting to write your memoir, want to write fiction or non-fiction – a writers retreat is where you will meet your tribe.

And where better to meet them than in lovely France in the fall, away from the distractions of daily life, with a group of people who get you and will help to feed your creativity.

The writing instructors

Cara Black is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of the Private Investigator Aimée Leduc series, set in Paris. Lindsey Tramuta is a travel and culture writer who moved to Paris from Philadelphia. She writes for multiple newspapers and magazines as well as the bestselling book “The New Paris” which looks at the key changes in Paris over the last decade. And Sylvia Sabes, a copywriter for clients such as Cartier, Dior, Lancome and Hermes as well as the Luxe City guide Paris resident editor. She’s also AFAR’s resident editor in Paris, writes for the BBC and is currently writing Fodor’s France guide.

They know what it’s like to doubt yourself as a writer, to get writer’s block, to worry that what you’ve written just isn’t good enough. But they also know this is something you can deal with. That there are ways to boost your creativity, beat that block and release your voice through your writing. And they’ll be on hand each day to help you.

The venue

Castle facades in Bordeaux, France

You’ll stay in a luxurious chateau in stunning surroundings where you’ll be spoiled with wonderful food and wines.

Every day there will be instruction and workshops with your writing instructors but you’ll also have plenty of time to relax and explore the area. Visit the local markets, the chateau of humanist writer Michel de Montaigne, wine tasting, a picnic lunch in a vineyard and a visit to a Roman ruin. Of course you can’t go to Bordeaux without a visit to the pearl of Aquitaine as the city is known. UNESCO listed city, world class museums and the best cakes shops. You’re sure to be inspired by the sights, the sounds, the smells and the wonderful flavours. You’ll be given personal journals to make notes in, perfect for those moments sitting in authentic cafés enjoying the sights and the ambiance.

The Coaching

You’ll spend around 18 hours of instruction focusing on a variety of key themes from show don’t tell, descriptive writing to how to create characters, personalizing your writing with your voice lots more. Everything that you need to write something you’re proud of. There will also be time spent on the business of writing – getting an agent, pitching, writing a proposal etc.

And there’s plenty of time to practice, ask the writers to review your work.

Kick start that dream of writing, finish the project you thought you never would, become inspired… that’s what this writer’s retreat is all about.
