Winner: Andrew Nixon

Sir Winston Churchill discovered painting at the age of forty and revelled in his new pastime. He went on to produce over 600 paintings, of which more than 150 were painted on the French Riviera alone. In Winston Churchill: Painting on the French Riviera, the artist Paul Rafferty reveals for the first time many newly discovered Churchill painting locations. We see how Churchill, with his ‘fearless impressions’ of the ‘paintatious’ area he loved so much, captured the scenes on canvas. And we learn much of his life in this, his favourite haunt.

As a young musician, the author, Paul Rafferty moved from London to California in 1989. He wrote, recorded and performed with Rod Stewart, Peter Frampton, Pat Benatar and Johnny Hallyday, among others. Later, as an artist, he moved to the French Riviera in 2008. Here he became familiar with – and fascinated by – Winston Churchill’s paintings in Provence. A highly successful artist in his own right, Rafferty has exhibited around the world and is represented by the Portland Gallery in London. He also has his own gallery in St-Paul-de-Vence (paulrafferty.art).
