National Holidays in France November 2018

1st  November 2014 La Toussaint – All Saints’ Day.  All over France, pots of chrysanthemums are placed on graves as loved ones who have passed on are remembered.

11th November Armistice 1918 – commemorative services will be held all over France in honour of those who lost their lives at war on this 100th anniversary remembrance day. The 100th anniversary remembrances will be particularly poignant.

National Events France 2018

What on in France November 2018

Burgundy – Beaune: 16-18 November Wine AuctionCreated in 1443 this charitable hospital is now known as the Hospices de Beaune. Such charitable organisations need endowments to support them and across the years many donors bequeathed vineyards to the Hospices. In 1859 for the first time the wines of the new vintage from these holdings were sold at auction. Now the hospices de Beaune wine auction is a major moment of Burgundian pageantry and the focal point for launching the new vintage. Les Trois Glorieuses – the greatest wine auction in the world is for those who are serious about wine, it’s also a great chance to enjoy tastings as various producers hold an open house for trying the latest vintages. You’ll need to buy tickets for the tastings (you can book online at www.beaune-tourism.com

Nord Pas-de-Calais – Etaples: 10-11 November Festival of the Herring (Fête du Hareng Roi), every year on the banks of the River Canche in the town of Etaples the humble herring is celebrated, cooked however you like it – grilled, marinated, smoked accompanied by a crispy chunk of French bread and a robust glass of wine. A huge party, delicious food, and an authentic festival. www.etaples-tourisme.com

Nomandy Wine and Local Produce Fair: 9-11 November 2018. Enjoy a taste of France’s gastronomic heritage at this fair in Rouen which showcases traditional products, specialities and wines from all around Normandy and further afield. www.salonvin.com

Rhone Alpes Cote D’Azur – Annecy:  9-11 November 2018 Annecy Wine and Food Festival. A few kilometres south of lovely Annecy, wine and gastronomic exhibition with tastings galore. www.salondesvins.org

Normandy – Orne, Le Sap: 10-11 November 2018 Cider Festival, Fete du Cidre. Annual event which celebrates the ancient art of cider making, using techniques from the old days. Demonstrations of cider making, music and entertainment, stalls selling cider, bread, local cheese and even hot apple soup. www.normandie-tourisme.fr
