Weekly newsletter from France | Bon Weekend!

Three dogs playing on a hill, at the top of which is a small brick chapel with a statue of a saint at the top

Bonjour

Hope you had a good week.

Here, I thought maybe it was time to build an ark – the rain we’ve had!

Thank you so much to everyone who sent such lovely messages about poor old Gregory Peck Jr the sick cockerel. I’m sorry to tell you that he has departed for a heavenly chicken pen and already Roger Moore the young upstart cockerel has taken his place. He seems a bit bemused by it all. Gregory Peck Jr was a tough old boy who ruled the roost with a firm beak. He had the most beautiful deep crow and the other cockerels including Brad Pitt and George Clooney, could never best him. Roger Moore was the runt of the rooster clan, doomed to roam the pen alone as he couldn’t figure a way out over the fence and Gregory Peck Jr certainly wasn’t up for sharing the ladies. But as the other cockerels are all escapologists, roaming the garden with their little harems, Roger Moore has now inherited the pen and most of the girls!

Despite the rain, blossom is making an appearance on trees everywhere. Twice a day I walk the dogs for several miles through the glorious countryside of the Seven Valleys and the fields and hedges are turning green and pink and white.

Monsieur, the old man who keeps horses in a field I pass every day, and who spoke to me for the first time recently despite being on nodding terms for at least 10 years, tells me we will have a wonderfully warm summer in the north of France. Apparently the birds, ants, frog spawn and spiders are an indication though when I asked him how he knew, he just tapped the side of his nose and smiled, a sort of Mona Lisa ‘you’ll never know’ kind of smile…

Wishing you a very bon weekend,
Bisous from France
