Skiers in Samoens in the French Alps

Samoëns is one of the least known ski centres in the French Alps outside of France – it’s also one of the best. Here’s why we think its a brilliant ski destination and we tell you our secret brilliant place to stay when you visit…

Samoëns– one of the best ski centres in France

In Samoëns, snow falls better and survives longer due to the Mont Blanc microclimate, and the resort is officially recognised as family friendly by the French Tourism Ministry.  The ancient village is part of the Grand Massif ski domain and is connected to high-altitude, snow sure Flaine AKA the big snowy bowl.

The Grand Massif offers an impressive 265km of piste and caters to skiers at all levels. For novice skiers and children the skiing is ideal at Samoëns 1600 (the largest beginners’ area in the Grand Massif). The longest run is the 14km Les Cascades (blue) from Grandes Platières (2,480m) to Sixt via the lovely Lac de Gers refuge. And, there’s more than enough to satisfy the expert, including the Gers bowl, with an 800m-drop of untracked skiing.

The centre of Samoëns is traffic free, and has a beautiful square dominated by a magnificent lime tree. For the self-caterer, the main street is a delight, full of gourmet shops offering mountain ham, local cheese and mouth-watering pâtisserie. Every Wednesday there is a wonderful market selling local produce.

The French proudly describe Samoëns as one of their monuments historiques, that just happens to be attached to a great ski area.

At home in the mountains

The magnificent mountainscape views and sparkling snow-capped mountains of Samoëns, cheesy fondues, steaming hot chocolate, an award-winning boulangerie and après-ski are just a few of the things that make a ski holiday here such a thrill. And if you’re looking for the perfect ski lodge then look no further – The Lodge ski chalet is gorgeous, cosy and set in idyllic surroundings. It’s just a short walk (or an even shorter drive) from Samoëns’ village centre, an hour from Geneva airport by car, and an eight-minute gondola ride from some of the Alps’ finest North-facing ski slopes.

With 5 double bedrooms it’s just right for friends and families. There’s plenty of room for socialising in the large, split-level lounge with a glass of something chilled around a roaring log fire. Of course that’s when you’re not in lovely Samoëns enjoying one of the many fabulous bars and restaurants. Just ask Morag and Andrew, the lovely British owners, about the best places for dining out in the town.

The Lodge has a large ground floor garage for storing, washing, and drying all your equipment and outdoor gear. Having this is a real treat, since there are numerous outdoor winter activities from ski, snowboard, snowshoe, skidoo, dogsled, and touring the mountain forests by flickering, real flame torchlight and more.

We love this place for the three south facing terraces, perfect to drink in those picture perfect views, the comfy interior and for being so cosy you never want to leave!

Ski holiday extraordinaire

For a ski holiday in authentic France, with the most amazing mountain setting and quite possibly the best ski runs – Samoëns is unbeatable. Combine that with a stay in a cosy, comfy and enchanting ski lodge, your home in the mountains, and you’ve got a little bit of snowy heaven.
