With 2020 being the year that we’ve spent more time in front of the TV than we might have expected, it’s a great new addition to the online stable of on demand films and shows. Although all programming from around the world is in the French language, it doesn’t matter if you don’t speak French. Pretty much everything has subtitles in English and other languages. For those missing their visits to France, learning French or just wanting to watch some great films, shows and concerts – it’s a great bonus.

French language films you can watch for free

Films range from historic to classic, thrillers and comedies. La Belle Americaine is wonderful for those who want to see vintage France. Made in 1961 it features a factory worker who buys a big American car which causes quite a stir in his village! Get your wanderlust fix with Liberté-Oleron set around the islands off of La Rochelle. Or Le Parfum de la Dame en Noir, a comedy thriller filmed in Provence.

French language TV series

Crime thrillers, drama, comedy and historical TV series from Francophone countries around the world provide a huge choice to suit all. There are also children’s TV shows – brilliant for those who are trying to help their kids with learning French.

Cookery shows about as you’d expect. Superstar chefs, cheese masters, chocolate makers – shows to make you drool.

And there are also fashion and architecture themed shows. Les Chateaux de France is perfect for lovers of gorgeous castles featuring the greats such as Chantilly (above), Fontainebleau and Pierrefonds. The series digs into the history of these fabulous buildings and the photography is stunning.

There’s even a section dedicated to French language. All you French language learners rejoice! And a series of cultural partnerships presents programmes that invite you to learn more about some of France’s most revered institutions.

Concerts and performances

A rich offering of cultural and arts programmes features a diverse range of music. From classical performances to Cameroon hip-hop, and performance arts. Music opera Le Vol du Boli promises to be of interest. Abderrahmane Sissako and Damon Albarn (Gorillaz/Blur) recount the path of a Malian fetish animist, a Boli, transporting us from Africa to Europe, from the 12th century to the 21st century.

Programming is regularly added too and there are several thousands free hours of watching to be enjoyed.

TV5MondePlus is totally free to use and accessible from all web and mobile data devices. There are no subscription fees or in-app charges.
