Everything You Want to Know About France and More...

Crazy Cockerels, Black Friday in France and more newsletter

A beautifully lit street in Sarlat France

Bonjour,

Hope you had a good week. Some weeks not very much happens here where I am in France. It’s a gentle pace of life on the whole and this week has been very quiet apart from the fact that my cockerel Ken has taken to climbing trees and dropping down on my head as I walk by unsuspectingly – scaring the bejeezus out of me. I feel a bit like Inspector Clouseau waiting for Cato to attack! (Here he is on Instagram if you want to see him getting ready to jump from the top of a tall pot!).

It might surprise you to know that “Black Friday” has arrived in the middle of nowhere France albeit in its own special way. The shopping phenomenom that started in the US hasn’t really been a big thing in France before now. This week though the papers have been covering the event with relish “C’est Quoi Black Friday?” (what is Black Friday?) they ask, and then tell us that it’s the chance to spend loads of money to save loads of money. Retail experts predict that online spending in France will increase this weekend by about 15% and in the shops by about 4%.

I’m sure I don’t need to tell you how many emails have been generated by companies with Black Friday offers – I personally must have received about 3 million this week. Okay I’m exaggerating but seriously, I’ve been bombarded by emails.

My only local Black Friday offer was not by email. I was buying chicken food in my local hardware store on Tuesday and the patron gave me a slip of paper inviting me to an evening of wine and duck sausage tart – plus 15% off everything in the shop. “We’re calling it Green Friday on account of the fact that we sell things for the garden and animals” he said, “There’s no obligation, just come and enjoy the tart and the wine but if you want to buy, that’s up to you and we’ve got some new chicken treats in” he added.

Personally I don’t know that Ken the chicken deserves a treat after his naughtiness this week but, 15% off… hmmm, it’s got to be done!

I wish you a very bon weekend.
Bisous from France
