Burgundy is a land of vineyards and picturesque villages, of wine and good food, markets and chateaux. It’s also an absolutely brilliant place to ride a bike or take a hike!
I’m not what you would call a bike or hike fanatic – I like to ride my bike from time to time, usually at a rather gentle pace. I like to walk along country lanes, through vineyards and orchards, into beautiful villages. Partly because I feel like I’m doing myself a lot of good, partly it makes me feel less guilty when I enjoy exquisite French food and partly because it’s the best way to truly get to know a place, at my pace.
France offers a plethora of fabulous destinations to cycle but one of my favourite places is Burgundy – for the wine, the food, the scenery, the castles, the gorgeous hotels and picturesque villages with quirky shops, the vineyards… I could go on and on and I will!
Burgundy with Headwater Holidays
I toured Burgundy on foot and by bike with a recommended itinerary and tip top support from Headwater Holidays. Like I said, I’m keen but lugging a case around on my adventure doesn’t appeal to me. I wanted the luxury of doing it in, well – luxury! I had only a few days and I didn’t know the area well enough to be sure that I’d find somewhere to stop for lunch. I wanted to know that I had restaurant bookings taken care of and someone to tell me where the best places are en route.
I wanted adventure, great gastronomy and wine tastings and I wanted to ride a bike and do a bit of walking and have the time to enjoy it all with a touch of indulgence. And I wanted the expertise of someone who knew the area and could help me see the best of it, Headwater did that brilliantly.
They booked the hotels and the restaurants. Their lovely rep in the area sorted me out a bike that suited me (I’m quite short!) and gave me a brilliant itinerary with hints for top wine tasting stops and chocolate shops (for souvenirs!) as I wanted. She also picked me up from hotels to go to dinner when I was tired, then collected me and drove me back. This is all part of the service. For me, it meant that I could really relax and walk or ride as much as I wanted and not feel tired or stress out about where I was supposed to be or stay.
I had the time to wander at will and really get to see the beautiful Burgundy countryside as well as visit legendary towns like Beaune and Dijon and do wine tastings and eat lashings of fabulous food. Every single restaurant that was recommended or booked for dinner was superb and I felt pleased to walk or ride off those extra calories before and after!
