Almost 500 years later, the owners of the Chateau developed their own Armagnac; it was considered one of the greatest of its kind and served exclusively on Concorde.

Around and about

Often called the “French Tuscany”, this area of Gascony is also known as “The country of a thousand Chateaux” and is the birth place of famous Musketeer d’Artagnan. Although it might be hard to tear yourself away from the relaxed ambience of the Chateau, there is plenty to do and see in the area with Biarritz, Toulouse and Bordeaux all less than 1.5 hours away.

The Chateau is close to the pretty town of Montreal-du-Gers with its vineyards and fields of sunflowers, and the nearby beautiful Landes pine forest. Created by Napoleon III along the Atlantic coast from Bordeaux to Biarritz, it is the most extensive forest in Europe and you will often smell the salty pine-perfumed fragrance as it wafts over the countryside. This lovely village was originally called Mont Royal, thanks to the legend that Henry IV spent a night of passion there, smitten with the charms of a pretty local shepherdess.

The area is famous for its wines and although once an important producer of Armagnac, these days it is wine that is produced here at the Chateau. The wine is made exclusively for guests, grown on vines in the Chateau grounds where the Romans too would have enjoyed the sunny climate and wonderful terroir that is so perfect for the grapes.

The Chateau staff will help you organise wine tasting events, picnics on the river, French cuisine workshops, floral display classes, hot air ballooning and lots more. You can enjoy musical evenings, concerts, plays, flea markets, petanque and the famous marionettes theatres in the local villages.

You won’t find this exquisite Chateau in any guidebook, the name is kept secret so that guests can be completely relaxed and uninterrupted – a hidden gem where time stands still…
