French illustrator Jean Giraud known to his legion of fans by the pen names Moebius  and Gir has died aged 73 after a long illness.

The artist is well known for his comic book characters including the co-creation of “Blueberry” which was one of the most popular strips in France.  The drawings of Giraud are admired by many for his intricate penwork but he was also instrumental in visual film artwork and his ideas were used in films such as Alien, Tron and The Abyss as well as the visually stunning film Fifth Element.

His many fans will mourn the loss of a great artist.

Jean Henri Gaston Giraud (8 May 1938 – 10 March 2012)
