French Out Of Print Books To Be Scanned For Sale

A French project to commercialise French books published prior to 2001 and that are no longer for sale in print or online is to go ahead.

A year following the breakdown of the Google Books Settlement court case in New York a year ago the French Government has passed a law to digitise and sell up to 500,000 out of print books from the 20th Century.

The new law is called “La loi sur les livres indisponibles du XXème siècle” and authors of “indispensable” books will automatically be included unless they formally opt out. The Government has said that they will take steps to ensure that where possible authors will receive 50% or more of the royalties.
